Don’t pick up the rope

“How do I stop responding impulsively when my kids backchat?”   Every parent leant forward in anticipation when a mum asked this question in a recent parenting seminar.   I responded, “Picture a rope thrown on the ground...then decide to leave it there.”   Let me explain.   Some years back, one of my children developed the habit of answering back, delivering a smart comeback or issuing a challenge to even my most reasonable request.   “Can you empty the rubbish bin?”   “Maybe!”   “Can you help your sister with her homework?”   “Why?”   You get the picture!   One day I asked her to walk the dog.
