Mothering Girls


When I gave birth to my son, over nineteen years ago, I thought I had this parenting gig down pat. He ate well, slept like a dream and, honestly, has been pretty much that way ever since. When fellow mums complained of sleepless nights, temper tantrums and exhaustion, my eyes glazed over; I simply couldn’t relate.   And then… I gave birth to a girl.   And all that I had ever known and taken for granted as a mother, literally went out the window.   I had many years of previous experience working with other people’s daughters (as a secondary teacher), however it’s a different ball game entirely when you are faced with your very own mini me!    I recall I used to smile and nod when exasperated mothers would come to me and express their deep desire to totally skip the teen years altogether.
